How we work

Therapy and counseling
in Houston

Lasting change comes from understanding what sits beneath a symptom, not just quieting it. Our clinicians work across proven therapies and a psychodynamic foundation, and our admissions team helps connect you with the approach, and the person, that fit.

Modalities

The therapies we
offer

A sampling of the evidence-based modalities our clinicians deliver. Most people work in more than one at once, and our team helps you find the right combination.

Depth work that follows a symptom back to its roots, the foundation the rest of our care is built on.

EMDR

Structured processing that helps the brain integrate painful memories, especially trauma.

Two friends laughing together as they walk through a leafy Houston farmers market.

A small circle of peers who understand, guided by an experienced facilitator.

A mother and her adult son cooking together, laughing, in a sunlit sage-green Houston kitchen.

When one person struggles the whole family feels it, and can be part of the healing.

A safe, non-judgmental space to rebuild trust and communicate again.

Care that begins from safety and never asks you to relive more than you choose.

Our approach

We start with the cause,
not just the symptom.

At The Lovett Center, therapy starts with a simple belief: lasting change comes from understanding the causes and conditions beneath a symptom, not just managing the symptom itself. Our work is grounded in a psychodynamic approach that treats each person in the full context of their life, the biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual threads that shape it, while drawing on the several recognized approaches to therapy that decades of research support.

That is why no two plans look quite the same. Talk therapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of mental health and substance use concerns, but which therapy, and which clinician, makes the difference. Our admissions team works with you to connect you with the right type of therapy and the right person to deliver it, then adjusts as you progress. Most of that work is built on the relationship between you and your clinician, so the match matters as much as the method.

Therapy at Lovett rarely stands alone. It is delivered inside a level of care that fits where you are, from weekly outpatient support to a structured intensive outpatient program, in person at our Montrose office or by telehealth at no extra cost. As your needs change, your care changes with them.

Common questions

Questions about therapy at
Lovett

The Lovett Center offers a range of evidence-based therapies, including CBT, DBT, EMDR, and group, family, and couples therapy, alongside trauma-informed care and medication-assisted treatment. Our clinicians are trained across these modalities and draw on a psychodynamic foundation that considers the whole person. Most clients use more than one at a time, for example individual sessions paired with a group.

See how we match care

Our admissions team works with you to connect you with the right type of therapy and the right clinician, rather than fitting you to a fixed program. That starts with understanding what you are facing, your history, and your goals, then matching the modality and the level of care to where you actually are. Because care is integrative, your plan can combine approaches and shift as you progress.

Start with admissions

In short, CBT changes unhelpful thought and behavior patterns, DBT builds skills to manage intense emotions, and EMDR helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories. They are less competing options than different tools for different needs, and many people use more than one. Each has its own page covering who it tends to help and who it may not suit.

Yes. In addition to in-person appointments at our Montrose office, therapy is available by telehealth at no extra cost. That makes it easier to keep care consistent around work, travel, and family. Our team can help you decide which sessions work best in person and which work well online.
