AN EVENT OFFERING 3 ETHICS HOURS OF CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS TO LCSWS, LPCS AND PHDS ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2015, 6:00 – 9:00PM
Clients want confidentiality. Healthcare Professionals build relationships based upon privacy and trust. Clients also want convenience. They text and email and want services way beyond the limits of traditional therapy. Clients also get into lawsuits and other legal proceedings and healthcare professionals get subpoenaed, most of the time without much notice or professional courtesy. There are many statutes, rules and regulations that impact all facets of clinical practice at the intersection where digital record-keeping, modern clinical practice and legal proceedings meet and sometimes collide head on. This interactive, hands-on, practical presentation will go into detail on how to deal with HIPAA, Medical Records Privacy, Substance Abuse Treatment Confidentiality (42 CFR, Part 2) and other Texas law and provide specific responsive techniques to these issues as they arise in clinical practice.
Training Objectives:
1. To set out in simple terms, the legal and ethical principles and current state of Texas and Federal law on Confidentiality, Privilege and the electronic storage and transmission of Protected Health Information;
2. To examine, unpack and reconcile ethical and legal dilemmas facing health care professionals in dealing with Protected Health Information;
3. To set out specific ideas and practical suggestions on how to respond to subpoenas and other intrusions into otherwise confidential health care relationships.
The Lovett Center is pleased to welcome William B. (“Bill”) Connolly, J.D. for our December CEU Event.
William B. (“Bill”) Connolly, J.D., is a 1974 Graduate of the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada and a 1979 graduate of South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas. His practice is focused mainly in the areas of Family Law, Juvenile Law and Civil Appellate Law. He is Board Certified in both Family Law and Juvenile Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is a former Professor of Juvenile Law at South Texas College of Law and is a past Officer, Director and Chair of the Juvenile Law Section of the Houston Bar Association and the Juvenile Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. Bill is a frequent author and presenter at CLE programs throughout Texas. He has lectured and presented extensively on the subject of therapeutic privilege and confidentiality. Bill is a current member of the Collaborative Council to The Permanent Commission on Children Family and Youth of the Texas Supreme Court and is a member and former Director of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts – Texas (“AFCC”), a member of Texas Academy Family Law Specialists (“TAFLS”) and is a member of Gulf Coast Family Law Specialists. He is a member of the Collaborative Law Institute of Texas and a past member of Collaborative Family Lawyers of Houston.
Bill is married to Lind Butler and is an Elder at St. Philip Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, creative writing and digital photography.
