Levels of care

Virtual IOP
in Houston

Structured intensive outpatient care, brought to you by secure video. At The Lovett Center, virtual IOP delivers the same clinical program as our in-person IOP: group therapy, individual sessions, and skills work for depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder, or substance use, from a private space at home while you keep living your life.

Who it's for

Intensive care that comes
to you.

Virtual IOP fits the person who needs more than a weekly therapy hour can hold, but for whom getting to an office several days a week is the real barrier.

An intensive outpatient program is structured treatment you attend several days a week while you live at home. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration describes it as ambulatory care, more than a few hours a day across multiple days, that serves as an alternative to inpatient or residential treatment. Virtual IOP keeps that clinical depth and delivers it by secure video, so the program fits around your job, your family, and your routine, not in place of them.

The format does not water down the care. Research comparing telehealth and in-person care for adults in intensive treatment found large symptom reductions in both, evidence that a virtual IOP can be as effective as attending in person. For anyone weighing whether coming in makes more sense, our in-person Intensive Outpatient Program runs the same program on-site in Montrose.

  • You need real structure, but getting to an office several days a week is hard
  • You are working, in school, or caregiving, and need treatment to fit around your day
  • You have a private space and a reliable connection to join sessions from home
  • You are facing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma, or substance use
  • You have a stable, supportive home to return to between sessions

Right-sizing your care

When a different level or format
fits better

Virtual IOP is the right fit for many people, and the wrong one for some. Honest matching of both level and format is part of the work.

  • When coming in person fits you better (in-person IOP)

Some people do their best work with the routine of leaving home and being in the room. Our in-person Intensive Outpatient Program runs the same clinical program on-site in Montrose.

If you need treatment most of the day to stay stable, our Partial Hospitalization Program offers more hours in the same outpatient setting. It is a step up in intensity, not a hospital admission.

  • When less intensity is enough (Outpatient)

If weekly individual therapy and psychiatry can hold the work, outpatient care is a sustainable cadence, and a common step down after IOP.

  • When care needs to come first

Virtual IOP is not for an active crisis, medical detox, or anyone needing 24-hour supervision. Lovett does not provide on-site detox or residential care; when that level is needed first, we help you arrange it, then welcome you for step-down. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.

How it works

The same program,
on a screen you trust.

No clinical maze and no second-rate version of care. Virtual IOP is the in-person program, delivered through a platform built for privacy.

Sessions run on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, and if video is not an option, phone sessions are available. You join structured group work and individual therapy from a private space at home, several days a week, with daytime and evening options. Your exact schedule is set with your clinician, so intensive care fits the shape of your week.

Group therapy is the cornerstone of IOP, and it translates well to video: a study of a telehealth dual-diagnosis IOP found group work delivered remotely held up against the in-person version. Because mental health and substance use so often occur together, our team treats these co-occurring conditions in one integrated plan, the approach considered best practice for care.

Common questions

Virtual IOP,
answered.

For many people, yes. Research comparing telehealth and in-person care for adults in intensive treatment found large symptom reductions in both formats, suggesting a virtual IOP can be as effective as attending in person. What matters most is the strength of the relationship with your clinicians and your engagement in the work, both of which carry over to secure video.

You join structured group and individual sessions from a private space at home, using a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. If video is not an option, phone sessions are available. The clinical work is the same as our in-person program: group therapy, individual therapy, family involvement, and skills practice, matched to what you are working through.

A reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private space where you can talk openly. That is enough to join. If video sessions are not workable for you, phone counseling is also available, so a lack of the right device does not have to keep you from care.

It fits people who need real structure but find it hard to attend in person: busy professionals, parents and caregivers, people with limited mobility, and those for whom leaving home for treatment feels overwhelming. It works best when you have a stable home and a private space. A comprehensive assessment is the surest way to confirm the right level and format, and we will tell you honestly if in-person or a higher level of care fits better.

Virtual IOP is a structured program you attend several days a week, with daytime and evening options, not a single weekly session. There is no overnight stay: you join on your scheduled days and live at home the rest of the time. Your exact days and hours are set with your clinician during your first assessment, so the schedule fits your life.

Yes. Virtual IOP supports depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma, and PTSD, along with substance use. When a mental health condition and substance use occur together, we treat them in the same plan rather than separately, an integrated approach that is considered best practice for co-occurring conditions.

Dual diagnosis treatment

Virtual IOP is built for adults in Houston and across Texas who would rather receive intensive care from home. Because where you are located can affect how virtual treatment is delivered, our admissions team confirms whether it is the right fit for your situation when you reach out. If in-person care turns out to suit you better, we will say so.

Yes. Sessions run on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, so your information and your conversations stay confidential. Joining from a private space of your choosing is part of what makes virtual care work: for some people, that privacy makes it easier to open up than a waiting room or an office ever could.

Most major plans cover intensive outpatient treatment, and many now cover it delivered by telehealth. That includes Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Magellan, and TriWest. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan, so we verify your benefits for free and explain exactly what they mean before you start.
